What Auphonic does
Auphonic is a web service for loudness normalization, noise reduction, leveling, and encoding. It can also generate transcripts and embed chapter markers in the files it produces. Plans start at $11/month (paid yearly), and you pay for processing time in credits.
Chapters are a secondary feature. You type chapter timecodes and titles on a waveform along with the rest of your production metadata, or let Auphonic's AI generate them.
Chapter editing
This is where the two tools differ most. Auphonic treats chapters as one more metadata field, next to the episode title and encoding preset.
PodChapters is built around the chapter editor. You see the waveform, place chapters on it, and adjust their timing to the millisecond. AI can suggest chapters from your transcript or audio, and you can paste a written outline and get timed chapters back.
Chapter formats
Auphonic writes ID3 tags and legacy MP3 chapters. It doesn't support Podcasting 2.0 chapters, Podlove Simple Chapters, or YouTube timestamps. PodChapters exports all of them, so your chapters show up in whichever podcast app your listeners use.
Transcripts and AI
Both tools can generate transcripts and use them to suggest chapter titles and timestamps. PodChapters can also turn an outline or your show notes into timed chapters.
Timing and chapter details
Auphonic places chapters on whole seconds, which can cut off the first word of a chapter. PodChapters places them to the millisecond. Both support chapter titles, images, and URLs, but only PodChapters lets you hide a chapter from the table of contents or attach a geographic location to it.
Pricing
Auphonic starts at $11/month (paid yearly) for 540 processing minutes, and that price covers its whole audio-processing suite. PodChapters starts at $6.99/month (paid yearly) with 300 AI credits, enough for up to 300 minutes of audio. If chapters are what you're paying for, PodChapters costs less and does far more with them.
Which one to choose
Auphonic is excellent at audio post-production. Chaptering isn't its strength, and if chapters matter to your show, a dedicated tool will do more for you.
