What ID3 Editor does

ID3 Editor, from PA Software, runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux and edits the ID3 metadata tags on audio files. It supports MP3 chapter markers and basic chapter editing. It costs $15 once and has presets for saving tag setups you reuse.

It handles album art, genre tags, and other metadata alongside chapters. If ID3 editing is your main job, it's capable. It was never built around chaptering podcasts, though, and as a chapter tool it's limited.

Built for podcasts

ID3 Editor is a metadata editor that can add chapters. PodChapters is a chapter tool designed around podcast production, and that shows throughout: an audio player with chapter navigation, chapter placement on a waveform, AI chapter generation, and export formats made for podcasting.

Chapter formats

ID3 Editor writes ID3 tags and legacy MP3 chapters. It doesn't support Podcasting 2.0 chapters, Podlove Simple Chapters, or YouTube timestamps, and it can't attach an image to a chapter. That's a real limitation if you want chapters with visuals.

PodChapters supports all of these formats, plus chapter images, URLs, table-of-contents visibility, and location data, so your chapters work in whatever app your listeners use.

AI and transcripts

ID3 Editor has no AI or transcription, so you create every chapter by hand. PodChapters can generate a transcript, suggest chapter titles and timestamps, and turn an outline into timed chapters. What used to be a long chore becomes a few seconds of review.

Timing precision

ID3 Editor places chapters to the second, which can cut off words. PodChapters works to the millisecond, so each chapter starts where you intend.

Presets and workflow

Both tools have presets for applying the same metadata across episodes. PodChapters adds smart text snippets, rules that apply a preset automatically based on the filename, and key terms and find-and-replace pairs for transcripts. These are for producers who manage several shows or episode formats.

ID3 Editor is $15 once, which is affordable if your needs are basic. PodChapters starts at $6.99/month (paid yearly) and includes AI credits, transcription minutes, and new features as they ship. If you chapter episodes regularly, the time AI saves you easily justifies the difference.
