What is Forecast?

Forecast is a free macOS application created by Marco Arment (the developer behind the popular podcast app Overcast). It's primarily a podcast encoding and metadata tool that also lets you add chapter markers. Forecast supports ID3 tags and legacy MP3 chapters. It does not support Podcasting 2.0 chapters, Podlove Simple Chapters, or YouTube timestamps.

Because Forecast is free and comes from a respected developer in the podcast space, many podcasters adopted it early on. However, its chaptering feature set is minimal, and the app has seen limited development in recent years.

Chapter metadata

Both tools support chapter titles, images, and URLs in MP3 chapters. But Forecast doesn't support hiding chapters from the table of contents or attaching geographic location data to chapters—both of which PodChapters handles natively as part of the Podcasting 2.0 standard.

Timing precision

Forecast works in whole seconds, which can lead to words being cut off. PodChapters provides millisecond precision, letting you place chapter markers exactly where they need to be for a seamless listening experience.

Forecast is free, and there's real value in that—especially for podcasters just getting started. But you get what you pay for. The verdict

Forecast is a fine free tool for the most basic chaptering needs on a Mac. But if you want AI assistance, modern chapter formats, transcript support, and the ability to work from any device, then PodChapters is the serious upgrade your workflow deserves.
