What Forecast does

Forecast is a free macOS app from Marco Arment, who also makes the podcast app Overcast. It's mainly an encoding and metadata tool, and it lets you add chapter markers. It writes ID3 tags and legacy MP3 chapters. It doesn't support Podcasting 2.0 chapters, Podlove Simple Chapters, or YouTube timestamps.

Because it's free and comes from a respected developer, many podcasters adopted it early. Its chapter features are minimal, and the app hasn't seen much development in recent years.

Platforms and formats

Forecast only runs on macOS and only outputs legacy MP3 chapters and ID3 tags. If your listeners use podcast apps that support Podcasting 2.0, or you publish video podcasts to YouTube, Forecast can't produce chapters for them.

PodChapters supports all of these formats, so your chapters reach listeners in whatever app they use.

Placing chapters

In Forecast, you type every timecode by hand. You can't click on a waveform, drag a chapter, or get help from AI. On long episodes that makes chaptering slow.

PodChapters gives you four ways to place chapters: click on the waveform, drag to adjust, type a timecode, or have AI suggest and insert them. With those, you can chapter an episode in seconds instead of half an hour.

AI and transcripts

Forecast has no AI features and no transcription. You listen, type, and save. PodChapters can transcribe your audio, use the transcript to suggest chapter titles and timestamps, and turn an outline or your show notes into timed chapters.

Chapter details

Both tools support chapter titles, images, and URLs in MP3 chapters. Forecast can't hide a chapter from the table of contents or attach a location to it. PodChapters handles both, as part of the Podcasting 2.0 standard.

Timing precision

Forecast works in whole seconds, which can cut off words. PodChapters works to the millisecond, so you can put each chapter exactly where it belongs.

Pricing

Forecast is free, and that has real value, especially when you're just starting out. PodChapters starts at $6.99/month (paid yearly) and adds AI chaptering, transcripts, access from any computer, and more chapter formats. If you take chapters seriously, the time it saves on every episode pays for it.
