What is Chapters App?

Podcast Chapters App is a native macOS application that lets you add MP3 chapter markers and ID3 metadata to your podcast episodes. It supports legacy MP3 chapters, exports to a Podcasting 2.0 chapters file, and YouTube timestamps. As a desktop app, it runs locally on your machine and processes your audio files directly. It's available for a one-time purchase of $19.99.

For years, Chapters App was one of the few purpose-built options for podcasters who wanted to add chapters in modern podcasting formats. It has some strange behaviors and limitations, but it does the basics well. Yet its feature set has remained relatively static compared to newer tools.

What is PodChapters?

PodChapters is a web-based podcast-chaptering and transcribing tool built for modern podcasters. It runs on any platform with a browser—macOS, Windows, and Linux—so you're never locked into a single operating system. PodChapters combines manual chapter editing with AI-powered chapter suggestions, transcript generation, and advanced features like outline-to-chapters conversion, reusable presets, and smart text snippets.

Platform availability

Chapters App is exclusive to macOS. If you wanted something for Windows or Linux, or need to edit chapters on the go from a different device, you're out of luck. PodChapters runs in the browser, which means you can access your episodes from a computer or mobile device browser without installing anything.

AI-powered chaptering

Chapters App has no AI features. Every chapter must be created manually, which means listening through your episode, picking timestamps, and typing titles by hand. For a 60-minute episode, this can easily take 20–30 minutes of tedious work. (This frustration is what inspired the creation of PodChapters!)

PodChapters can generate AI-suggested chapters from your episode, dramatically reducing the time it takes to chapter an episode. You can provide your own transcript or let the AI generate one for you, and then use that transcript to suggest or place chapters for you. PodChapters can also convert your own outline into timed chapters—features that simply don't exist in Chapters App (or maybe any other tool)

Timing precision

Chapters App rounds chapter times to the nearest second, which can lead to words being cut off. PodChapters gives you millisecond-level precision, which matters when you want chapters to start exactly at the right beat or word. That level of control lets you create a polished, professional listening experience.

Chapter format support

Both tools support ID3 tags, legacy MP3 chapters, and Podcasting 2.0 chapters. However, Chapters App does not support Podlove Simple Chapters—a format still used by some podcast apps and platforms—while PodChapters does. PodChapters also supports geographic location metadata per chapter, which Chapters App lacks.

Workflow and productivity

Chapters App is a straightforward “open file, add chapters, save” tool. PodChapters takes this further with reusable presets, custom text snippets, and multiple placement methods including click-to-place, drag-to-adjust, manual timecodes, and AI-assisted insertion. If you produce multiple shows or episode formats, the preset and snippet system saves significant time across episodes.

Chapters App costs $19.99 as a one-time purchase, which is appealing if you prefer not to pay a monthly or yearly subscription. PodChapters starts at $6.99/month (paid yearly), which includes AI credits, transcript generation, and continuous updates. Within three months, the cost is comparable, but with PodChapters you get substantially more capability for your investment.

The verdict

Chapters App is a solid, simple tool that has served tight-budget Mac-only podcasters well. But if you want AI-assisted chaptering, millisecond precision, cross-platform access, transcript support, and a more modern workflow, PodChapters is the clear upgrade.
