What Chapters App does

Podcast Chapters App is a native macOS app for adding MP3 chapter markers and ID3 metadata to episodes. It writes legacy MP3 chapters, exports a Podcasting 2.0 chapters file, and creates YouTube timestamps. It runs on your Mac and works on your audio files directly. It's a one-time purchase of $19.99.

For years it was one of the few purpose-built options for adding chapters in modern podcast formats. It has some odd behaviors and limitations, but it does the basics well. Its feature set hasn't changed much while newer tools kept adding to theirs.

Platforms

Chapters App only runs on macOS. If you're on Windows or Linux, or want to edit chapters from another device, it won't help. PodChapters runs in the browser, so you can open your episodes from a computer or a phone without installing anything.

AI chaptering

Chapters App has no AI features. You listen through the episode, pick timestamps, and type every title yourself. On a 60-minute episode that can take 20 to 30 minutes. (This frustration is what inspired PodChapters!)

PodChapters can suggest chapters for your episode, which cuts that time sharply. Bring your own transcript or let PodChapters generate one, then use it to suggest or place chapters. You can also paste your own outline and get timed chapters back. Chapters App can't do any of this, and we don't know of another tool that does outline-to-chapters.

Timing precision

Chapters App rounds chapter times to the nearest second, which can cut off words. PodChapters works to the millisecond, so a chapter can start exactly on the right beat or word.

Chapter formats

Both tools support ID3 tags, legacy MP3 chapters, and Podcasting 2.0 chapters. Chapters App doesn't support Podlove Simple Chapters, which some podcast apps and platforms still use, and it can't attach a geographic location to a chapter. PodChapters does both.

Workflow

Chapters App is a simple open-file, add-chapters, save tool. PodChapters adds reusable presets, custom text snippets, and more ways to place chapters: click to place, drag to adjust, type a timecode, or insert with AI. If you produce several shows or episode formats, presets and snippets save time on every episode.

Pricing

Chapters App is $19.99 once, which is appealing if you'd rather not pay for a subscription. PodChapters starts at $6.99/month (paid yearly) and includes AI credits, transcripts, and ongoing updates. Three months of PodChapters costs about the same as Chapters App, and you get much more for it.
